Whether you are looking at ballet, hip hop, or a mommy-and-me class for your toddler, dance offers many health and social benefits.
All styles of dance make for a great cardio workout. Every style gets your heart-pumping and your body moving and reacting differently than normal. Movements that we typically do in our daily life (like walking, taking the stairs, and common workouts like treadmills and cycling) all occur in a sagittal (vertical) plane. Dancing works our bodies from all planes, including lateral and rotational, which activates and conditions all muscles, building strength and balance.
Many forms of dancing, such as ballroom, are appropriate for people with limited mobility or chronic health issues. If you have concerns about the intensity of a class, talk with your doctor and one of our instructors before starting a class. We can help you with any modifications if needed.
Research has shown that the areas of the brain controlling memory and skills, such as planning and organizing, improve with exercise like dance. So if you are ready for a boost in cognitive performance, dancing is a great way to maintain and challenge your brain power. Learning a new style of dance does require focus. The constant and changing movements mixed with the need to recall moves and patterns is an excellent form of mental exercise.
One of the great things about dance is that anyone can participate! If you’re able to move, even if it’s only your upper body, you can dance. Since dancing is extremely expressive, we find ourselves letting loose and allowing the daily stresses and anxieties melt away. After an hour of dance class and feeling impressed with the new steps and moves we learned - everyone feels a boost in self-esteem and good mood!
Movement and rhythm comes naturally to kids, and when you get a child involved in regular dance classes the benefits only get better. Not only does dance allow kids to get their energy out, it’s also a safe way for them to express themselves. The artistic side of dance gives kids an opportunity to learn a new language: the language of movement.
Dance training also teaches kids that diligent work pays off. It’s such a concrete way for children to see that observing their actions and listening to guidance from teachers, combined with hard work, leads to positive results that they can witness in the mirror.
Dance also helps kids learn discipline because they have to memorize and execute specific steps and body movements that require practice and perseverance.
